017 - Office Dress Code (Part 1/4)
After interviewing 1000 gents in the market, GQ magazine released the 40 style guide for the office workforce. We are going to break down each rule and comment on every single one. Let us know your thoughts and comment below.
1. YES. IT DOES MATTER
GQ: Looking presentable isn't to impress your boss or colleagues, but to have some self-respect. It acknowledges that your are preparing for something important and reminds you to prize your dignity.
Style 4 Gents: We totally agree. More or less like women putting on their heels, it boosts their confidence by improving their posture. It's true that when you dress better, you tend to perform better.
2. YOU DON'T HAVE TO WEAR THREE-PIECE SUIT TO YOUR START-UP
GQ: Keep doing what you're doing, only do it better.
Style 4 Gents: Take a second look of your closet, throw away the unfits. Finance world speaking, eliminate the underperforms will improve the returns on the portfolio.
3. THAT SAID. YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WEARING A SUIT
GQ: You are never underdressed, and you always look your best. It's paired up so you don't really have to feel the headache of thinking what to wear in the morning.
Style 4 Gents: While we are mostly business causal in the office, we do agree it's almost a must to have a suit in the office at all time. In the case of unplanned client meeting, video conference, a date after work…
Project Upgrade
4. Tighten Up - No more bunchy, ballooning suit.
Style 4 Gents: Seriously, I can't believe people are still thinking 'The people in my office are dressing this way (baggy suits and pants), so I will follow.' Unless you don't workout, have a 50 inches belly… in that case you should first take care of your health. Also, your baggy suits are definitely not industry standards.
5. Nix the shiny silk - Try a tie with texture
Style 4 Gents: We all know silk is the guarantee of quality in the tie world. But it certainly doesn't hurt to freshen up your boring collections with different material like wool (in the winter) and new texture.
6. Think small - Trade the big plaids with small prints
Style 4 Gents: Smaller plaids and prints tend to project a slimmer figure. In other words, you look better in shape and more sophisticated.
7. Even Smaller… - Tie bar and pocket square
Style 4 Gents: For daily office routine, we don't think it's a must-have item. But if you want some attentions from your colleague or the person at the bar… Be bold, it could be a good conversations topic.
8. Stay closed for business - Keep the jacket buttoned unless you are sitting down or closed a deal
Style 4 Gents: Simple rule. It's more causal to have it opened and more official when it is buttoned. Tune up or down depends on occasions (and belly movement).
9. Just say no to square toes
Style 4 Gents: Unless you choose to live in the old days … like very old days…then your stubbornness shall refuse you to change anything.
10. Lunch will somehow catch on your shirt. Always stack up some Shout Wipes and Spare shirt.
Style 4 Gents: In my case, it's the lady who spill the soy sauce on my chest and i had to buy a new shirt right away. Lesson learned.
